Biologic Detection Diagnosis and Surveillance

Project Objectives:

The overall goal of this program project is to improve and facilitate the detection of a biological event at the earliest possible point to enable rapid and effective response and consequence management. Towards that end this project will define, and categorize the most promising state-of-the-art technologic and scientific approaches for biothreat and emerging infectious disease diagnosis and surveillance which can be integrated into the health care infrastructure to assure the most effective triage, identification and treatment of potential victims.

  • To define and categorize currently available methods for timely and reliable diagnosis of emerging and biothreat infections in medical settings in selected representative states.
  • To define and categorize the range and key components of current syndromic surveillance methods in place in selected representative states.
  • To conduct a systematic review of currently available, developmental and potential technologies for bedside detection of emerging and biothreat agents.
  • To host expert workshops on diagnosis and surveillance with the objective of grading evidence for strength of existing, developmental and potential diagnostic and surveillance methodologies.
