Project Objectives:
The Underserved Populations Project has the goal of increasing the involvement of grassroots organizations and other entities involved with critical event preparedness activities targeted to assist underserved populations in times of crisis. To accomplish this goal, the project has delineated five main objectives: (1) Assess current resources and research being conducted in DHS Centers of Excellence (START—Vaughn, Cutter) and other sources of information relevant to underserved populations; (2) Assess TAHEC (Tuskegee Area Health Education Center) capacity to deliver preparedness related information to the underserved with emphasis on demographics, geography, and methodology for engaging, accessing, and serving underserved population; (3) Formalize relationship with TAHEC as delivery point of a demonstration project.; (4) Conceptualize demonstration project, including qualitative assessment, potential partners and stakeholders, and resources required to complete task; and (5) Disseminate research findings.
Project Summary & Planned Activities:
Specific activities related to achieving the outlined objectives include: (1) Identifying the target group(s) and possible variations of what is termed underserved; (2) Using the Area Health Education Centers network to implement a demonstration project; (3) Determining what messages to disseminate based on various competencies (economics, culture, language, geography, etc.); (4) Establishing a methodology for engaging and accessing underserved groups; and (5) Identifying a means to inform underserved populations and grassroots organizations that serve them about opportunities available within DHS S&T.
