Project D4: Biologic Detection: Detection and Surveillance

Richard E. Rothman, M.D., Ph.D.Dr. Richard Rothman is an Associate Professor and Research Fellowship Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine, and holds a joint appointment in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHU-SOM). He holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and has over 15 years of experience in the area of basic molecular innovations for rapid detection of biologic agents in acute care settings. Dr. Rothman has served as Principal Investigator (PI) on numerous collaborations with biotechnology companies including LINK technology (evaluation of sepsis markers), Becton Dickinson (evaluation of PCR for sexually transmitted diseases), and IBIS Pharmaceuticals (development of a universal biosensor) and has consulted both for the biotech industry in the BT arena, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the area of surveillance and acute diagnosis of infectious diseases.

Dr. Rothman is currently PI of the Diagnostics section of the NIH Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for Excellence Grant where he leads a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional team of investigators in design testing and clinical evaluation of emerging diagnostic platforms. As a leader in both public health and research committees for the national emergency medicine societies, Dr. Rothman has had extensive experience in organizing and chairing conferences, which he can draw upon to meet the goals of his project area. Dr. Rothman will provide overall direction and coordination for the Health Science and Technology Section ‘Standardized Approach for Detection and Treatment of Populations.
